The Reality of Running a Small Business: The Jobs Nobody Sees

I don't think I've ever met a business owner who's said, "I've got loads of spare time and absolutely everything is under control."

Most of us are just doing our best to keep all the plates spinning while convincing everyone else we've got it all figured out.

The reality is that running a small business involves far more than most people ever see. There's always an email to reply to, something to chase, an invoice that needs sending, or a social media post you've been meaning to write since last Thursday. And somehow, despite every task only taking "five minutes", half the day disappears.

You start the morning with a perfectly sensible plan. Then an email lands in your inbox, the phone rings, something urgent crops up and someone needs information. Before you know it, it's mid-afternoon and the thing you originally sat down to do is still waiting patiently at the top of your list.

Sound familiar?

And let's not talk about the number of times I've made a cup of tea, sat down to work and then become so distracted that I've discovered it stone cold an hour later. I'm fairly sure that's a compulsory part of running a business!

The truth is, most business owners spend their day wearing far more hats than people realise. One minute you're doing the job you actually started your business to do, the next you're answering emails, updating social media, sorting admin, solving problems and wondering why you walked into the room in the first place.

It's no wonder we sometimes feel stretched.

Most people only see the finished result. They don't see all the little jobs happening in the background that keep everything moving, or the planning, organising and problem-solving that goes into making things happen.

And honestly, that's probably for the best!
